Access & Equity

The Access & Equity SIG creates a space for state mathematics leaders to engage in an open dialogue, professional learning, and discussions that are centered on policies and practices that perpetuate inequities in K-12 mathematics education. The Access & Equity SIG focuses on member learning as well as ways to consciously engage educational shareholders in practices that provide equitable access, opportunity, representation, and participation for ALL, specifically, those children/ parents/ families/ caregivers/ educators/ communities who have been historically marginalized.

Assessment

The Assessment SIG explores asset-based assessment practices by supporting the professional learning of participants and developing products that benefit ASSM membership.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The ASSM Artificial Intelligence SIG focuses on exploring AI in math education through risk-free contexts to try out new generative AI tools. We utilize AI in authentic education settings, critically analyzing the outcomes to understand the risks and benefits for students, teachers, and state policymakers, including potential biases and privacy issues in AI that could increase inequities. Members share best practices and policies, fostering a collaborative environment where we can learn from each other’s experiences.

Elementary Mathematics

This year the Elementary SIG will be exploring promising practices from state level projects. Each month we will feature a topic or a project from a state that has shown evidence of success. We will also dig into some problems of practice unique to the elementary grades in our discussions.

Data Literacy

The skill of critically analyzing data to solve problems has always been necessary, but with advances in digital technologies which collect vast amounts of data, the skill has become simultaneously more important and more complex. The Data Literacy SIG is intended to inform and support the K-12 data literacy policy landscape, as well as the research landscape. It provides opportunities to reimagine preparation and support for pre-service and in-service educators to teach data literacy; and to inform messaging that deepens leadership and stakeholder understanding and awareness of structures that support interdisciplinary learning with and about data.

Emeritus+

The “+” in this SIG indicates this group may venture beyond a single focus in mission and membership. Initial work will focus on connecting with our emeritus members and prompting opportunities for emeritus members to serve ASSM. Emeritus status is not required.

Leveraging Research for Advancing Policy and Practice

This SIG is intended to leverage collaboration to help state math supervisors become more efficient and effective in using research to drive policy recommendations and decisions in math education. Through collaborative study and application of current and seminal research, members will grow their skills in interpreting and implementing empirically supported initiatives that ultimately strengthen state-level recommendations and policies.

Pathways

The Pathways SIG discusses and collaborates on issues related to the development of an inclusive system of education that is designed to maximize opportunities for students based on their area of interest. Topics are member-driven and include detracking, equitable mathematics pathways (including Data Science), deep dive into High School Reimagined, and opportunities to connect with other CBMS organizations. Mathematics Pathways include options for students in secondary mathematics settings that support success in post-secondary education and career opportunities for every student. This time also incorporates collaboration around standards/guidelines, resources, state updates and more.

Special Education

The ASSM Special Education Mathematics SIG explores equitable ways to support students with Identified needs and the professionals who work with them.
